I’m Kaveh Najafian, the founder of Studio Contingency Plans, an interdisciplinary design studio I established in 2020 in Hamburg, Germany. As an architect by profession, I’ve devoted over 15 years to shaping physical spaces and exploring new technologies that redefine the boundaries of design. My background includes a Master’s degree from the University of Applied Arts Vienna and years of experience leading projects that merge craftsmanship with cutting-edge innovation.
My design philosophy is rooted in the belief that creativity should transcend traditional boundaries. I see design not merely as the creation of physical spaces but as a versatile framework that connects diverse disciplines, ideas, and technologies. In an era defined by groundbreaking advancements in AI, digital fabrication, and the urgent need for sustainable design, I believe in adopting innovative tools and methods that empower us to create responsibly, in harmony with nature, while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
While architecture remains my primary field of activity, I have deliberately diversified my practice to include other creative industries, such as 3D-printed object and furniture design and the generation of artistic, design, and architectural concepts using text-to-image AI applications. These explorations are not just experiments—they are strategic steps toward shaping a future where design harmonizes human intuition with technological advancements. For me, this transition is essential to remain relevant and innovative in a world increasingly influenced by technology.
My creative process begins with an intuitive idea of space —an abstract reaction to an idea or context. This initial intuition forms the foundation of every project and is developed through rigorous exploration, blending design theories with advanced experimentation. By transforming raw ideas of space into tangible, functional designs, I aim to create work that resonates on both visual and intellectual levels. I strive to maintain a balance between technological sophistication and the timeless essence of craftsmanship, ensuring that my designs are not only innovative but also meaningful and enduring.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of leading and contributing to several noteworthy projects. While at Hadi Teherani Architects, I served as the Head of Design for the award-winning Atmosphere by Krallerhof, which received prestigious accolades such as the MIPIM Awards 2024, ICONIC Awards 2023, Built Design Awards 2024, and AHEAD Awards 2024. My studio, Studio Contingency Plans, has also gained recognition for projects like the Louhi Lounge Chair series, Flying Versailles (featured in L’Architecture d’Aujourd’hui), and collections such as Dancing Alphabets and Terrain and Textile. In 2024, the studio participated in the Cluster Jewelry Fair in London and Oslo Fashion Week, showcasing the innovative use of AI in design and fashion.
For me, design is not just a profession but a powerful medium for connection and exploration. Through Studio Contingency Plans, I continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible, shaping a practice that is as emotionally grounded as it is forward-thinking.
