Louhi Secures 1st Place in Objects & Items at AI Design Awards 2024

Louhi: Please Do Not Take A Seat, has been awarded 1st Place in the Objects & Items category at the AI Design Awards 2024. Louhi is a conceptual exploration that challenges traditional notions of functionality and design. While it adopts the form of a lounge chair, it intentionally defies practicality, serving instead as a sculptural piece that provokes thought and introspection. This deliberate ambiguity invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions of everyday objects and the boundaries between art and utility. The creation of Louhi was facilitated by the AI-powered tool Midjourney, which allowed for the generation of surreal and experimental designs. This process underscores the potential of AI in the creative realm, enabling the conception of forms that might be unattainable through conventional design methods. The resulting piece embodies the fusion of human imagination and machine intelligence, highlighting the evolving relationship between designers and technology.

Louhi belongs to a tradition of objects that resist their assigned role, much like Duchamp’s urinal or Manzoni’s can of artist’s excrement.

The name Louhi is derived from a shape-shifting queen in Finnish mythology, symbolizing transformation and the exploration of new realms. This allusion reflects the project’s intent to traverse the boundaries between the real and the unreal, the possible and the impossible. By embracing the concept of ‘impossible’ structures, Louhi serves as a testament to the limitless possibilities that emerge when human creativity collaborates with artificial intelligence. As part of this recognition, Louhi will be showcased at the “AI Design Awards – 2024 Winners Exhibition”, scheduled from April 17–22, 2025, at the Palau Dalmases Exhibition Room in Barcelona. This exhibition will feature a diverse array of projects that exemplify the innovative integration of AI in design, and I am excited to be part of this forward-thinking showcase.

3rd Place in Fashion: AI Design Awards 2024

Terrain & Textile, has been awarded 3rd Place in the Fashion category at the AI Design Awards 2024. This series explores the intersection of natural landscapes and textile design, using AI as a tool to translate geological formations into speculative fashion.

Terrain & Textile captures the ephemeral beauty of materials shaped by erosion, sedimentation, and time. It offers an aesthetic of decay and transformation—celebrating the rhythms of the earth as a generative force. By engaging with topographic textures and raw, fragmented forms, the collection draws attention to the environmental narratives embedded in matter itself.

This is to step into the flow of geological time, to feel the pulse of an ancient world that moves at its own rhythm, indifferent to ours

In line with my broader design philosophy—centered on fluid, cross-disciplinary thinking and a commitment to sustainable futures—this project reimagines the lifecycle of fashion. Terrain & Textile proposes a design language that values slow processes and material storytelling over trend-driven consumption. AI, in this context, becomes a tool not just for formal invention but also for imagining how design might align with ecological sensibilities.

The series will be exhibited at the “AI Design Awards – 2024 Winners Exhibition”, taking place from April 17–22, 2025, at the Palau Dalmases Exhibition Room in Barcelona. The show will highlight forward-looking projects that explore the role of artificial intelligence in shaping more thoughtful and innovative design futures.
